Founded in 1944 as part of the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, NSF has evolved from a small foundation focused on standardizing sanitation and food safety requirements to a leading global not-for-profit organization committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide.
We facilitate the development of public health standards, and test, audit and certify products and systems for the food, water and related sectors to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment.
Our food services serve the agriculture, retail, food manufacturing, hospitality and leisure, catering and foodservice, institutional, food equipment and nonfood compounds sectors.
Our water services include testing and certifying products from source to tap in contact with drinking water and for various sectors and applications such as pools/spas, plumbing, plastics and water treatment devices.
Separate from certification, NSF has a leading role in building water health and water safety and provides water safety plans and Legionella risk assessments.
